Did you willingly succumb to temptation? Did you feel pressured into following the herd? Or are you heroically standing firm and staying with what you’ve got. I’m talking of course about the Facebook Timeline design for people’s home pages. You too can be reminded about how quickly your life is passing before you. You too will have to search around for a widescreen photo or else be confronted by a blank space. As I write these words are you still blase about the whole issue, or is your blood beginning to boil, your latent conservatism overflowing? Let’s take a deep breath, relax and review the facts.

Mark Zuckerberg introduced the Timeline design claiming that it allowed you life story to be displayed on one page, which wasn’t apparently the case previously. As you scroll down the page you’ll be reminded of the places you’ve been to, the friends you’ve made, etc. I’ve never kept a diary so being on Facebook has been a novel experience for me. My status updates aren’t as overtly personal and as frequent as other Facebook friends whose confessionals might best be suited to Twitter. Timeline links up with other apps, e.g. Spotify, so you are kept aware of what your friends are listening to. I personally have been made aware of Guardian articles that friends have recently been reading.

When websites come out with a re-design my immediate response isn’t attraction, more often its puzzlement at why it was needed in the first place. Within a week I’ve worked my way through the various emotional stages and become accustomed to it. I remember looking at some old BBC web pages from way back when and you can certainly see the design evolution that’s taken place over the years. I’d be lying if I said I wanted to go back to the old design but maybe that’s because I’m somewhat stoical about things, accepting more readily than others what has just occurred and cannot be reversed. At the other end of the scale I have friends who when told about it, have straight out said they loathe the idea and would rather deactivate their accounts than live with it. So are you for or against? Are you eager to return to MySpace per chance…?

IntroWhile the talk of the tech town has of course been focused almost 100% on tablet PCs recently in the wake in of the new iPad announcement, thousands are still entering stores each and every day completely on the fence when it comes to the notebook Vs tablet purchase decision. So, by taking the merits of both into account, is there a real winner in terms of overall benefit for the user?NotebooksThe biggest pro of all packed by the notebook still comes by way of performance, as it is perfectly possible to take home a laptop or notebook with specs that pretty much run circles around even the best tablets. The presence of a physical keyboard can also be a draw to say the least and with a new generation of %u2018ultrabooks’being offered thinner and lighter than ever before – such as the MacBook Air range – portability has also taken on a whole new dynamic.

With regard to downsides – sadly all this prowess does not come without quite the price in most instances and the notebook still cannot offer quite the same user-friendly interface as comes as standard with most iOS and Android tabletsTabletsBragging rights aside, versatility and entertainment are the primary driving forces behind the success of the tablet, offering superb power, graphics and portability second to none. The touchscreen also allows for a world of apps and games the likes of which the notebook cannot come close to – all for a price which in most cases will be far lower than the more high-end of the notebook catalogue.

Cons – specs can be rather stunted compared to the notebook and lack of a physical keyboard limits certain business activities. ConclusionSadly the answer comes right back down to what the buyer is looking for, as it high-end business is the order of the day, there can be nothing quite as useful as the notebook. On the other hand, those after nothing more than entertainment could opt for a lower range netbook and still have enough cash over to indulge in a little contemporary designer jewellery as a bonus.

Typing and word processing is one of the elemental functions of a computer, correct? Correct. It’s what most of us do, day in, day out, on our desktops or laptops. It’s that or aimlessly searching for new shoes, old schoolfriends and shoot ’em up games on the internet.

That’s why I can’t understand the major gap that exists in current software. It’s 2012, we have voice recognition software, mobile phones thousands of times more powerful than the first ever computers… apple mac support london can fix pretty much anything, including your toaster. And yet it’s still really difficult to find a great word processing program.

Sometimes when I’m battling with Word I feel like grabbing a manual typewriter like the lady above! We’ve covered the odd spell check goof it’s prone to, but it’s the formatting that drives me mad.

The scenario usually plays out like this: I’m typing. Let’s say it’s at work. If it’s at work it’s probably a report of some kind. It’s most probably a little bit dull, and I’m hoping to finish it as soon as possible. Maybe it’s 4.30pm. Perhaps it’s a Friday. I’m really, really hoping to get out of work on time tonight. I’m going to add a little more tension: it’s my best friends birthday tonight and we have to be on a train from Waterloo to party-town at 5.35pm. I’ll never hear the end of it if I miss it. I need to get this done.

But Word has other ideas. I want to have several paragraphs inset from the main body of the report, all aligned. Word says no. Word wants them inset at several slightly different distances, and wants to make it impossible to make them line up.

I want to add (or delete) some text to one of the paragraphs. Word doesn’t like that. Word adds random spaces to the rest of the paragraph that then have to be laboriously removed.

Ad infinitum. Word has it’s own bizarre formatting rules that it works by that are seemingly known only to itself.

No surprise, I end up sweating and hunched over my keyboard at 7 minutes past 5, still formatting away. I make the party train (I don’t want to be too mean to imaginary-scenario-me) but only by the skin of my teeth. Ah, Word…

I really did throw my computer out of the window last week. There is context to this story however I can assure you. First of all, my computer was old bordering on becoming a relic. Secondly my internet service provider decided to finish the job and give my faithful machine a virus which effectively wiped the hard drive. So you see, even though I did throw it out of the window, it was okay to do so. The only problem was I needed a new computer and a new internet provider.

Finding a new computer was a lot harder then I thought it would be. I browsed through literally hundreds of models including Samsung, Acer, HP, and Sony…all the usual suspects. A similar problem I found with each was the battery life problem. As I am usually on the move a lot I decided that this time I would get a laptop that has a decent battery life and wouldn’t conk out after only a few hours use – something which my old faithful laptop was guilty of doing. Battery was the main problem I had to wrestle with as I didn’t really mind too much about the graphics or processing speed – as long as it could hold a decent internet connection I really didn’t care. In the end I went for the Dell Vostro 3350. Sleek and stylish, it has good WiFi and ADSL ports for hardwire access to the net should you need it.

The 3350 has become my new best friend. Not only does it stay charged for 8 hours without having to resort to the charger, it also supports my new internet provider. With my old provider being tragically useless, (and dangerous in the end!) I had to do a bit of shopping about before I came across one that suited my needs. I needed mobile internet as well as home based access and the only provider who could give me that flexibility as well as a good price was abroadband.com. As I’m able to transfer the sim card from my phone into a USB dongle I can use the internet anywhere all over the world. As it hasn’t blown up my new laptop yet, I remain confident that this could be the provider for me.

Mobile internet is essential for anyone travelling about a lot and this laptop does not disappoint.

I still miss my old laptop (and I will never forgive my old service provider for destroying it) from time to time, but I have to admit that the Dell I bought has been great. With The New York Times reporting that Dell’s profits are up for the first two quarters this year, I have to say I’m not surprised judging by what I’ve seen from my laptop’s performance thus far. It’s doing everything it said it would on the tin and a little more – even though I never wanted one, I have a biometric fingerprint reader on the side! With all the usual accoutrements – Bluetooth, Printers, and Mice – I cannot recommend the 3350 enough. At £500 it’s a bargain.

I have always been annoyed by the need to install new software every time I got a new phone – to transfer data or to simply re-install a feature, it has always been related to installing CDs, cable problems, quite annoying procedures, compatibility problems and so on. Sometimes, with an iPod or an iPhone it is even worse when the extremely heavy iTunes makes whatever it wants with my PC. To be honest, it feels worse than an inaccurate antivirus system.

However, the people from Nokia have finally found a solution to such a problem. The new devices operate in a friendly, no- need – to install software. N8, the first really amazing smartphone by the company, is composed of the most advanced Symbian technology. This is the reason why it works with standard players for music and video transfer, it works with ease on different platforms and machines and does not require additional install. Even if it does require such, for more advanced settings and options related to the device, you can easily download an up-to-date version for free from the initial window of the device connection and to use it with no problems after your computer automatically finds the most proper version on the web.

This is definitely time-saving and quite user-friendly. It also prevents you from the need to resolve software problems, to cope with extensive RAM memory use and from different incompatibility mistakes. Personally, I have found the best solution to phone computing by easily buying a Nokia. It is not only a perfect phone with the best technology I have seen on a mobile device, but also eases my data transfer and does not burden my computer.

I need spell-check on Microsoft Word, or whatever programme I am using. I can’t do without it. I can spell, sure, but when it comes to getting every grammatical point right, I always fal. See what I mean? I couldn’t even spell fal right. FAIL, I MEAN, I MEAN FAIIIIIIIL. Or just “fail.”

Anyway.
I really need to calm down.

There, that’s better.

I wish I didn’t need it, though, because recently it’s been making me so angry that I literally come within seconds of tearing all the vinyl stickers off my prized guitar. And that’s not something I ever used to think about, as I love that guitar!

My problem? Simple, it is this: whenever I try and do a spell-check, it brings up things which are unnecessary. I am talking about sentence fragments, for example. When will it learn that we live in the 21st Century now, not the 17th! If I want to spell a sentence as a fragment – so in other words, a sentence that isn’t a sentence – then I should damn well be allowed to! Then there’s the fact that if I press ignore by accident, I can’t go back a step and re-change it…

Basically, as you can plainly see, it drives me right up the way. I wish Obama would sort it out. Surely he must get stressed about this too, right? And if the President of The United States can’t sort this issue out, I ask you reader, who actually can?

After checking worldwide roaming plans online I decided to log on to my Facebook account for some online socializing. I logged on then I began to see advertisements of the things I have checked online directly put in my face through my Facebook page. I was actually not surprised because I got to learn about this in an Audience Management class but it is just disgusting to have advertisers all over your page. Your page is supposed to be personal but I guess it is no longer news that Facebook generates billions of dollars from selling people’s information to advertisers. That is why it is easy to see that most of the things advertised to you are what you like of what you have interest in.
For those who do not know, social networking sites are not as free as you think so stop feeling that you get to socialise with your friends at no cost. The amounts your friends and you generate have turned the owners of social networking sites into overnight billionaires. I am not going to ask you to stop socialising; I will probably fail in this bid if I was actually trying to stop people from networking through the various online mediums. I only want to advise that you reduce the amount of personal information you provide to these sites. That is why you see the really smart ones amongst us coming up with a different name and with few pictures. Revealing everything about your life allows the whole world access to you. Take a minute to think about it; the whole world can access your personal information!

One of the great things about facebook is also one of the worse things. I find it extremely helpful to circulate pictures of my family to friends across the ocean. But, I always feel inadequate. It seems like I am surrounded by people with carte r4 when I am still playing checkers with my kid. My friends are always having perfect vacations on perfect beaches with perfect children looking unbelievably happy and healthy. I am jealous. There is a weird psychology to people who update the weird minutia of their lives on their facebook page. They are assuming that other people care, and they truly must because they always respond with some pithy little comment-’good going’or ’way to go’or the very worst ’lol’. It reminds me of when my sister was doing her round the world trip and she used to send pictures of her and her partner by post in those days. What always struck me about the photos is that they always looked happy, and I thought I would never be as happy as my sister. Then I realized that it was the time of day that she took the pictures and in the last rays of the orange light of the setting sun, everybody looks gorgeous and blissed out. Facebook family pictures have that same quality. They are chosen to make the world think that you are happy and facebook is the golden orange light of the setting sun. Nobody would think of posting anything less online.

No matter how much we argue that technology is sometimes taking away our personal life, our comfort of socializing in person with others and our advantage of being social beings in the finest sense of the word, still people persist to follow simplified social norms such as the Facebook socializing. Yes, you can find everything on the social network – from the works of the artist Fabian Perez to the latest updates of brands like Puma. But what you lose is a nice and colourful world waiting for you outside the room.

Psychologists from the California University recently called the social network Facelessbook simply because it deprives individuals from a real personality. Moral values cannot be transmitted through facebook and this is the reason why the social level of the social network is actually lower than anything you can experience in the world outside. The so called facebook syndrome, however, persists in every society as a cancer sell, growing and catching more people in its trap. Facebook is not evil, it is a good concept. But Facebook, just like simple entertainments like having a drink, must be managed properly and should not impose restrictions on the capacity of individuals.

However, Facebook is being misused and individuals lose identity in the social network. Interest in sport among young people decreased, their individual aspirations are starting to influence them negatively, they lack the capacity to manage real life relationships with others. This is how facebook have contributed to a soulless society, parasitic social system and an increasingly troubling factor in the modern day society.

As every single piece of technology that reaches the consumer’s market, the tablet mania is a business so juicy and attractive to technology developers that it is going to become the major tech addiction for millions of people. Companies producing smartphones and computers are currently competing to produce the ultimate tablet – something that is about to become a gadget number one among high tech products available for consumers. And it is a good business since people want more and more from internet and communication technologies (even the tiniest currys.co.uk discount vouchers ).

Recently, the Canadian company that produces the highly addictive smartphones Blackberry (Research in Motion) announced its plans and strategies to release a new model of tablet by the beggining of 2011. After several companies released tablet technologies – the unbeatable Apple, Samsung and HP, the guys from RIM are just another strong corporation that aims to enter quickly in the market. They have sufficient lead because of their blackberry phones and people know a lot about the technological approach of the company. So this might be a big advantage for them.

The new tablet by RIM is nothing different from the tablets offered by the top tablet producing companies – touch screen extremely comfortable and easy to use, multimedia file support to give you the ultimate pleasure, wifi and 3G network access and other business features that might interest you. The design the company is offering is pleasant shape with simple design features – exactly what people like nowadays. Considering the quality of their products, undoubtedly their tablet would be a preffered product by many and it is just a matter of advertising and a marketing strategy that would significantly increase their sales rates – let’s see how far the tablet mania would expand and whether the tablets would be the next laptop replacement after the supersmart mobile phones.
